19 Things People with Anxiety Can Relate To

19 Things People with Anxiety Can Relate To

I feel like anxiety is something that can go away for a long time, only to come and sweep you off your feet without a moments notice.

Kind of like a predator lurking in the shadows.

One minute you’re a happy little zebra, chewing on grass in the Savanna, then bam! A big old tiger comes and takes a bite out of your ass. Or something like that anyway.

I like to think of anxiety as a little brain malfunction. One where it feels as though the world as you know it is about to end and that nothing can put it back on track. The good thing about having anxiety time and again (yes, I said ‘good’ thing) is that once you’ve had it a couple of times, the rational part of your brain can still tell you it’s not all bad.

Things will be OK, this is just a temporary blip.

Anyways … I’m of the school of thought that if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. So lets laugh, shall we? Here’s a tongue in cheek look at what it feels like when anxiety comes back to bite you in the bum.

  1. You can’t do patience. Even the tiniest of inconvenience gives you rage.
  2. You overthink everything. I mean EVERYTHING … including worrying about why you’re worrying.
  3. And your overthinking always focuses on the worst case scenario.
  4. You cry over the tiniest thing at a drop of a hat.
  5. Sending a message and not hearing back straight away convinces you that the whole world hates you.
  6. Equally, you have about 100 unread messages in your inbox, because the idea of opening them all inexplicably fills you with dread.
  7. As does answering an actual real life phone call. Who even uses the phone to make calls these days anyway????!!!!
  8. And if the call is from an unknown number, there’s no way on gods earth that you’re answering that one.
  9. Meeting new people feels like arriving at the gates of hell.
  10. And when you do meet new people, you’ll probably go red and start waffling.
  11. Before mentally replaying all the stupid things you said over and over again.
  12. Which is one of the many reasons why you cancel at least 50% of your plans.
  13. You’re 90% convinced that you have a serious illness 90% of the time.
  14. For the other 10% of the time, you’re convinced it’s someone you know.
  15. You spend more time thinking about your to do list, than actually doing because … procrastination.
  16. Which makes you even more convinced that your brain is indeed made of cotton wool.
  17. You’re probably feeling pretty tired.
  18. But go to bed and you’ll be tossing and turning all night.
  19. You know that anxiety is a waste of energy and worry, but it’s just not that easy to switch it off.

If you can relate to any of these then welcome to the club. I’ve heard there’s quite a few of us …

I don’t think I have experiences with anxiety. But many of the thoughts or issues you list above sound very familiar in relation to my periods of stress and depression.

I like your style of writing.

    And yes lets laugh 🙂

I used to experience it when the twins were little – about things like going out in public! One would usually melt down or run away from me! I found it quite hard to deal with, even more so when I was trying to chat to my friends and it was impossible! I’m a pretty confident and happy person nowadays but things like meeting new people or going into new places can make me anxious. I find being prepared and organised helps to keep me on track xx

Oh this is me at times for sure. I am definitely susceptible more to anxiety when I feel drained and ‘peopled out’ or if I’m facing a brand new thing or experience. xx

I never used to struggle with anxiety but over the last couple of years it’s been becoming a bit of a problem – I can relate to quite a few of the things on this list. But like you said, once you’ve experienced it a few times you learn to recognise the signs and you’re more able to challenge it.

I have always been a hyper anxious person so it’s slightly different in the fact that I love big group gathering and meeting new people and can be social. But I have all the other anxieties listed in those environments. I always have to be around people and doing things on the go but I get anxieties whether I am saying stupid things, doing stupid things, will they like me, do they turn and talk about me, alot of it started when I became an expat it’s out of my comfort zone of knowing how a culture reacts to a person its’ very different in the UK to the USA for sure. My anxieties get worse as I age too. Can nod to most of this list. Welcome to the club at least we aren’t alone! lol #wrc

This is pretty much spot on. Anxiety is such an arse – but, like you say, if we can’t laugh at ourselves then what! x

I’m not really a worrier, I’m quite rational and tell myself that worrying is just a waste on time and energy, what will be will be… However, I do quite often feel anxious and not want to face people. Some days I can feel confident and happy, other days I just don’t have it in me. I definitely loose my patience too quickly on these days too! Life ha?!

I definitely have moments like this, I often find its when I’m run down or things are getting on top of me. Just like today in fact and my solution today was a little retail therapy in Topshop. I don’t suffer with these periods of anxiety daily so I can’t imagine how tough it is to manage. A lovely post and yes lets laugh more often x
